Everyone’s excited to spend the day at the amusement park. Perhaps you spent months saving up for the trip or it’s a spur-of-the-moment decision made when looking for some fun family entertainment.

Either way, you’ll want to stay safe while enjoying all the fun an amusement park has to offer. Before leaving home grab the first aid kit and make sure it is fully stocked. It’s possible kids will stumble in their excitement and get a scrape or bruise.

Take along any medications that need to be taken during the day and any emergency meds. Add some sunblock, as most parks have very little shade.

When first arriving at the park point out the information kiosk and the uniforms of park employees so kids will know where to go if they get separated from you. Remind them not to talk to strangers, but it’s OK to seek help from a park employee.

For older kids, choose a designated safe area to meet up at a certain time. Watch younger children closely and also watch out for people who may be watching them.

Follow all the park rules

The height, weight, and age charts are not merely suggestions. Testing is performed to establish what body type can physically withstand the force exerted from the ride. Restraints are made for certain body types also. Read all signs with instructions aloud to help your child understand.

Explain to your child that he must listen carefully to instructions given by the ride operator about keeping their hands and legs inside and to stay seated until the ride comes to a complete stop.

Make sure they understand that sometimes rides pause to allow others on or off, so they should never move until the operator tells them it’s okay.

Let them know that if they get scared during the ride they still must stay seated. They can hold on tight, it will be over soon and you will be there for them when it is over.

Proper Clothing

Dress comfortably in light colored clothing. Many families wear matching shirts so they can spot each other easily.

This is not the time to try out new shoes so wear a close-toed pair that have been broken in. You will be around industrial machinery all day so never wear scarves, clothing with drawstrings, long necklaces. or anything that dangles.

Food and Drink

It would be great to fit in at least one regular meal. The smell of corn dogs, funnel cakes, and popcorn hanging in the air makes the chance of that happening slim to none. You can always try.

At least try to stay off the rides for 15 minutes or so after eating that delicious park food. We all know what could happen if you don’t.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep away from the sugary drinks. The kids may balk for a second, but they’re at an amusement park so they’ll get over it quickly.

You’ll make lots of memories and have tons of fun at the amusement park. Just remember the rules are not there to spoil your fun, they are there to keep you safe.
